A charming, sunny seascape by the British artist Hugh Boycott Brown (1909-1990), rendered with loose, impressionistic brushwork and a minimalistic palette of pale blue, terracotta, dark lilac, and white tones. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame with a white slip. On board.

Condition

Some discolouration and areas of overpainting, but the condition is very good overall. Minor scuffing and dents to the frame.

Artist Biography

Hugh Boycott Brown (1909-1990) was a British painter of predominantly marine subjects. He studied at the Frobisher School of Art in Bushey, before furthering his studies at Heatherley's School of Fine Art. From the 1930s he spent long holidays in East Anglia, where he became friendly with Sir John Arnesby Brown, who encouraged him to paint. He entered the RAF during the Second World War, serving as an Intelligence Officer, before moving to Blakeney in Norfolk. Boycott Brown was a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Wapping Group. He is represented in the collections of Bushey Museum and Art Gallery and National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. He was taken up by American galleries in the last twenty years of his life and showed at the Maritime Gallery, Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, USA. Solo shows were held at Belgrave Gallery in 1986, and a memorial show was held at Abbott and Holder, London, in 1991. He was a brother to Michael Boycott Brown, who hyphenated his name as Boycott-Brown, unlike his brother.
