Hubert Coutts (1851-1921) - 1894 Graphite Drawing North Berwick
Description
A fine graphite scene showing a mill town with timber framed buildings and an arched stone bridge. A hay cart is being pulled into town while figures cross the bridge around it. There is a man fishing on the banks of the river in the foreground.
The drawing is presented in a gilt effect frame with a wash-line mount and glazing. There is a label at the back of the frame with the artist's signature, date and location of the painting. There is also a framer's label with the date.
On wove.Condition
The drawing is in fine condition. The mount has minor foxing and the frame has general surface scuffing and scratching and several small losses along the lower edge of the inner window.

Artist Biography
Landscape painter. Born into a family of Lake District artists, son of the artist Edward Tucker (1825-1909) and brother of artists Alfred, Edward and Frederick Tucker. (Coutts changed his name from Hubert Coutts Tucker and was variously listed with the Christian names Hubert and Herbert). Exhibited at the Royal Academy, Dudley Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy. He was first president of the Lake Artists' Society and a member of Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters from 1912.
