Description

A finely painted wooded landscape scene by the well listed artist Hilda Montalba. The painting portrays a sense of movement and light, achieved through Montalba's short, quick brush work. Montalba has captured the elegance of the thin tall birch trees, and the sheltered forest bed underneath. Quick strokes of orange, gold provide a sense that the autumn season has begun to set in. The painting is signed by the artist in red to the lower left corner. Beautifully presented in a well suited gilt and orange frame. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Inspection under UV light reveals an area of restoration to the bottom left corner of the painting. The canvas has been re-lined. Some scuffing and minor surface marks to the edges of the frame.

Artist Biography

Hilda Montalba was one of four artist daughters of the Swedish-born painter Anthony Rubens Montalba, (1813-1884). Like her sisters Clara and Ellen she was a prolific exhibitor showing at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Baillie Gallery, Fine Art Society, Grosvenor Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Society of Women Artists. Examples of her work are in the collections of Museums Sheffield and the National Trust.
