Collection Information
Born 1943, Dunfermline. Hilary Paynter studied sculpture and wood engraving at Portsmouth College of Art. She combined a career as a teacher in comprehensive schools and special education and later as a Chartered Educational Psychologist, with intense and prolific wood engraving. She is now a full-time artist. Instrumental in the revival of the Society of Wood Engravers in the early 1980s, Hilary was its lynchpin for over three decades, initially as Honorary Secretary, later as Chairman, and continues to organise the annual, touring exhibition. Recent projects for the Society include the design and realisation of the highly successful Millennium Ark, on which 26 wood engravers collaborated. Hilary Paynter’s work is represented in the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford), Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge) and the Victoria & Albert Museum. It is also in city galleries including Birmingham, Hereford and Portsmouth; and in the universities of London and Northumbria.
