A brooding, stormy sky looms over a field of haystacks in this charming rural scene by Dutch artist Hermanus Dirk van der Meijden (1915-1990). Van der Meijden employs Impressionistic impasto brushwork that provides the work with an attractive surface texture. Monogrammed and dated to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas.

Condition

Light surface discolouration including yellowing to the varnish layer. Areas of craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Wear around the edges of the canvas, visible on the right-hand edge. Scuffs and small losses to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
