With the trees beginning to change from green to autumnal shades of orange and brown, Ernest Higgins Rigg (1868-1947) captures the changing of the season in this tranquil impressionistic scene. Water tumbles over rocks in a wide stream, the sunlight reflecting in its surface, while cottages nestle amongst trees in the distance. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame with a canvas slip. On canvas board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration and surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Marks, scuffs, and small losses to the frame.

Artist Biography

Ernest Higgins Rigg (1868-1947) was born in Bradford, and studied at the Bradford School of Art and subsequently at the Académie Julian in Paris. He is best known as a painted landscapes and genre painter, primarily in oils. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, and Royal Society of British Artists. Examples of his work are held by the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby, the Cartwright Hall Museum, and Sheffield Art Gallery. He also illustrated magazines, including 'Harmsworth Magazine' and 'Bibby's Annual'.
