Hermann Ludwig Umgelter (1891-1962) was a German painter, best known for his landscapes depicting his Swabian homeland. He also painted still lifes, animal paintings, and portraits. Born in Botnang, Umgelter attended the Bürgerschule (a type of school that prepares its pupils for practical professions in the commercial and craft sectors, rather than for university) in Stuttgart and completed an apprenticeship as a decorative and theatrical painter. After returning from the First World War, he established his reputation as an artist. The Württemberg Art Association and the Stuttgart State Gallery both exhibited his works, and he became a member of the Stuttgart Artists' Association in 1929. He submitted a painting to the Munich Art Exhibition in 1937, but it was rejected for being too modern.
