Artist Biography
Herbert Granville Fell was a painter, illustrator and art critic, born in London. He studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art and on the continent. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when only nineteen years old and was also illustrating for journals such as The Studio and Pall Mall Magazine around this time. His book illustrations included The Song of Solomon and Nesbit's Book of Dragons. Fell's artistic abilities were equalled by his talent as a critic and writer and he was for many years editor of the Connoisseur. A member of the Art Workers' Guild he also wrote acclaimed monographs on Cezanne and Vermeer. He occasionally showed at the Chenil Gallery and examples of his work, strongly Art Nouveau in style, can be seen at the V&A.
