Henry Wilkinson was an engraver and painter best known for his paintings and engravings of sporting dogs. He was the son of artist Henry Robinson Wilkinson (1884-1974). During a professional career spanning over sixty years, he applied his creative talent to fields as diverse as silversmithing, gunmaking, cabinet making and stone masonry. Following early studies at Winchester College of Art where his father was headmaster, entrance was gained to the painting school at the Royal College of Art. However, he soon transferred to the Engraving School where he learnt his basic skills. He won a British Institution Scholarship giving him extra time at the college, enabling him to gain a travelling scholarship where he studied in Heidelberg, France and Italy. After World War II he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. For many years Wilkinson was Head of Engraving at the City and Guilds of London Art School, a consultant to the Morris Singer Bronze Foundry, and a council member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.
