A very fine late 19th or early 20th Century landscape work in watercolour, by the English Victorian artist Henry Martin Pope (1843-1908). Pope often instills a dream-like quality in his work, demonstrated well here by this mountainous farmstead with two figures and roaming chickens. Using a carefully layered technique and a unified palette, the artist has captured the ethereal quality of the natural landscape, and how we use it.
Well-presented in a darkened gilt wooden frame, as shown. Signed to the lower right corner.
Signed. On watercolour paper.In very good condition for a picture of this age. There is some very light foxing, mainly seen in the upper right area. The frame has minor scuffing to the corners, but is also in very good condition.

Henry Martin Pope (1843-1908) was a little-known painter and printmaker who was born in Birmingham and studied at Birmingham School of Art, under Edward Watson and Samuel Lines. He was a founder member of the Birmingham Art Circle And lived in Kings Norton which was then in the countryside near Birmingham. He painted and engraved landscape, local topographical and rustic subjects in oil and watercolour. Encouraged by his friend Walter Langley, Pope lived for a time in Newlyn, Cornwall and exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RBSA, RBA and RI. He was fond of views in and around Worcestershire and Warwickshire and also travelled to Wales. Henry Pope work is held in the collections of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Kenilworth Town Council.
