Artist Biography

Painter known as Watson Wood was born in Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland. Wood painted landscapes, figures, golfing scenes and marinescapes in watercolours, tempera and oils. He trained in London at the RCA and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. Returning from Paris, he became the assistant art master at Newcastle School of Art, 1883-89 before being appointed Headmaster at Hawick School of Art, 1889-99. Watson Wood showed with the YUA at the beginning of his career and in the 1930's he was successful in having work hung at the GI, New English Art Club, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.


He lived on the Isle of Wight at Cowes according to the 1911 census one assumes gathering subject matter for his abundant seascape paintings. He covered the surrender of the German Fleet during World War I and was the Official War Artist for the Royal Canadian trip of 1939. Paintings by him are held by the Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, Britannia Royal Naval College and the National Trust. His son, Frank Wood and grandson David Wood were also artists. He died at Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
