A wonderfully vivid and rich mezzotint by the esteemed Scottish print maker, Henry Macbeth Raeburn. This regal and characterful portrait shows the fifth Duke of Gordon, also known as The Cock of the North in full traditional Sottish attire with a badger sporran, kilt and a particularly fine tam o' shanter. This regal character is standing against a majestic backdrop of a Scottish mountain range under a dramatic sky. The use of colour and composition make this a truly striking portrait.
The artist has signed in pencil at the lower edge of the image. The publisher's details and dates have been inscribed in plate. The original plate lines are in tact and there is a blindstamp in the lower left corner
On wove.There are some faint bleached white spots around the edges of the backing sheet. The image itself is in pristine condition. There are strips of tape at the top and bottom edges of the backing sheet.

Painter and printmaker, son of the artist Norman Macbeth (1821-1888). Born in Helensburgh, Scotland Henry studied at Edinburgh University and art at Royal Scottish Academy Schools and at Académie Julian in Paris. He was elected a member of RE in 1905 and of RA in 1933 and served on both their councils. He was a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1943-45 and also exhibited at ROI, RSA, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the RI and elsewhere. He was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and his work is in the GAC. He was the husband of Marjorie May Bacon.
