Kinnaird specialised in landscapes and river scenes and favoured a naturalistic style similar to John Horace Hooper. He painted in both watercolour and oils but was best known as a watercolourist by his contemporaries. He exhibited a number of works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
