Artist Biography
Henry Cotterill Deykin was a painter, sculptor, furniture maker and teacher, born in Edgbaston, Birmingham. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art. Deykin later taught at Warwick School, except for a period with the Camouflage Unit during World War II. In 1950-51 Deykin was commissioned by Geoffrey Pugh, head of Atco Ltd, the lawnmower company, to complete 23 paintings showing the progress of grass sports in the 20th century and the resulting works were given a countrywide tour. The collection was sold at Sotheby's in 1982.
Deykin showed at the RA, Whitechapel Art Gallery and elsewhere in mixed exhibitions. His sponsored solo shows included Eton Art School, Harrow School of Art, Cambridge School of Art and Norwich School of Art. Latterly, Deykin concentrated on furniture making until arthritis made it difficult for him to work. His work can be found in the collections of the National Football Museum and the World Rugby Museum.
