Artist Biography

Henry Slater Boddington (1849-1925) was a watercolour painter of topographical and landscapes scenes. Born in Eccles, Lancashire, he was the son of the famous brewer Henry Boddington (1813-1886) who retired to Silverdale, Cumbria. Upon his father’s death, Boddington bought the Pownall Hall estate in Wilmslow, Cheshire, but retired from the chairmanship of the family firm in 1891. As a keen painter, he spent much of the rest of his life living at the house he bought at the artists’ colony at Etaples in France, becoming good friends with Ford Madox Brown and William Lee Hankey.

As well as views in Lancashire and Cumbria, Boddington painted many subjects in France. He exhibited at the Allied Artists Association, among other institutions from 1908 onwards. A retrospective exhibition of eighty of his works was held at Lott & Gerrish in London in 1982, and Manchester City Art Gallery hold a number of his works.
