A very fine original 1834 watercolour by the 19th Century British artist Henry Bielfeld (1802-1892), entitled 'The Fortune Teller'. Central to the composition, a young maiden in a flowing white dress looks down on an elderly fortune teller, who is perched beside a spinning wheel with a cat and a dog. The setting is idyllic, with a garden bridge and a thatched cottage visible through the trees.
Bielfeld worked in a traditional style of the period, with meticulously fine and layered brushwork.The structure of the work is suggestive of a fairy tale, at a time when Classical mythology and Romanticism was at its height.
Handsomely presented within a titled triple mount, and gilt wooden frame with acanthus leaf moulding and bead and reel running pattern. Signed minutely on the collar of the sleeping dog, as well as to the very lower edge, and dated 'Jan '34'.
On wove.In very good condition overall. There is some surface discolouration, expected for a picture of this age. There is also a small surface abrasion to the lower left corner. Some minor dirt trapped behind the glazing. The frame has an area of restoration to the lower left corner. Otherwise, only minor scuffing.

Henry Bielfeld (1802-1892) was a British painter and engraver, born in Heavitree near Exeter, Devon. He flourished in the period 1825 to 1856, and exhibited many pieces at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Suffolk Street galleries with the Royal Society of British Artists. His work is largely figurative and Classical.
