Description

This charming scene depicts a peaceful garden where a woman in a red dress sits on a green bench beneath the dappled shade of a large tree, working intently on her sewing. The artist employs loose, expressive brushstrokes and a soft colour palette of greens, blues, and warm earth tones to create an intimate outdoor moment that captures the leisurely atmosphere of a quiet afternoon in a garden. Signed and dated. Presented in a rustic gesso frame. On board.

Condition

There are some light marks to the surface of the painting. Areas to the top right where cracks in the board are slightly visible. Wear to the frame has left it with a rustic finish.

Artist Biography

Henri Vincent-Anglade was born in 1876 in Bordeaux, France. He added his mother's patronymic to his father's to distinguish himself from his brother, the poster designer René Vincent. Vincent-Anglade was a pupil of Gustave Moreau, Fernand Corom and Francois Flameng at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and also Amable Pinta. Early in his career, he became a fashionable portrait painter, mainly of intimate paintings of women. He exhibited in Paris and regularly appeared in exhibitions, especially the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded a distinction in 1903. He was a regular at greyhound and horse races, and was also valued as an animal painter.
