Artist Biography

Henri de Braekeleer (1840-1888) was a Belgian artist born in Antwerp. He received his initial artistic training from his father Ferdinand de Braekeleer, a well-known genre painter, and his uncle Jan August Hendrik Leys, before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He exhibited his first paintings in 1858 at the Antwerp Salon whilst he was still a student. After finishing his studies he travelled to Germany and the Netherlands to study sixteenth and seventeenth century painters. The work of Johannes Vermeer would prove especially influential. In 1872, he received a gold medal at the Salon in Brussels for 'The Geographer' and 'The Lesson' and, in 1873, a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Vienna for 'The Painter's Studio' and 'Grandmother's Birthday Celebration.' De Braekeleer stopped painting entirely between 1879 and 1881 due to depression. When he started to work again, he used shorter and more visible brushstrokes, perhaps influenced by the Impressionists. Vincent van Gogh mentioned de Braekeleer in letters to his brother Theo several times, referring to him as an artist he liked as well as one also afflicted by mental illness.
