Hendrik Grise

This small but bold collection of works by the American artist Hendrik Grise features expressive figure compositions in watercolour, gouache and pen and ink. Vibrant and fun, they encapsulate his playful approach to expressionism.

Hendrick Grise was born in Michigan on June 5, 1914 and died in Monterey Park, California on Feb 7, 1982. Grise studied commercial art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Professional Art School, and Dallas Museum of Art. He went on to teach commercial art at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga from 1950 to 1980. Grise participated in a 1970's exhibition titled 'Three Artists/Three Points of View' at the Museum of History and Art in Ontario, CA., however, he was seemingly uninterested in selling or exhibiting his art to the public. His work is characterised by vibrant abstract compositions and expressionistic figure depictions, completed in bold brushstrokes.
