An expressive and vibrant watercolour painting with pen and ink by the American artist Hendrick Grise. The scene depicts an interior setting with two nude figures. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner. Presented in a dark wooden frame with an inner gilt detail, as shown. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, minor surface marks and very light surface creases. Some scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Hendrick Grise was born in Michigan on June 5, 1914 and died in Monterey Park, California on Feb 7, 1982. Grise studied commercial art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Professional Art School, and Dallas Museum of Art. He went on to teach commercial art at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga from 1950 to 1980. Grise participated in a 1970's exhibition titled 'Three Artists/Three Points of View' at the Museum of History and Art in Ontario, CA., however, he was seemingly uninterested in selling or exhibiting his art to the public. His work is characterised by vibrant abstract compositions and expressionistic figure depictions, completed in bold brushstrokes.
