Painter of seascapes, born in Wambrook, Somerset. Hely Smith as he was known attended Lincoln School of Art, furthering his studies later at the Antwerp Academy. Elected RBA in 1901, he became that society's Treasurer in 1902 and was also a member of the Langham Sketching Club. He exhibited with the UA, SMA, RA, RHA, RI, ROI, RSA, GI and the STISA where he was a member from 1934-41. Paintings by Hely Smith are held by Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, Plymouth Art Gallery and RAMM.
