There has been a small restoration to the moulding on the frame at the upper-right edge. There is a small mark to the right edge of the painting. There is some slight dirt beneath the glazing. Overall in very good condition.

Helen Ainslie Wingate (1886-1954) was a painter born in Muthill, Perthshire. She was the daughter of Sir James Lawton Wingate, President of the Royal Scottish Academy. It can be assumed that she studied at the RSA Schools as there is no evidence to the contrary. She worked in oils and watercolours and painted both portraits and landscapes. Her married name was Helen Ainslie Thornton. She exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
