Description

A beautiful oil portrait by German artist Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911) depicting a young Italian bride adorned with a jewelled tiara from which a sheer veil flows gracefully, her dark hair elegantly swept up. The sitter's soft, melancholic gaze meets the viewer directly, embodying the romanticised beauty that was immensely popular amongst northern European academic painters of the period. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with a repeating palmette motif that perfectly complements the painting's neoclassical aesthetic. Signed lower right and dated 1893. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration and areas of overpainting. Fine craquelure is observed throughout. There is a horizontal surface scratch to the lower right-hand quadrant, running through the sitter's shoulder. Light abrasions to the left-hand edge. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
