A pair of very fine and remarkably detailed watercolours with gum arabic and gouache details, by the late 19th Century British ornithological artist Harry Y. Bright. The works both depict birds of the English countryside, with two chaffinches to the left on branches, breaking seeds, and a song thrush to the right.
Bright is known for his meticulously detailed technique, and both of these works reflect his renowned technical skill, with a real sense of each individual feather, carefully rendered at a level not often seen in works from this period. The birds blend seamlessly with the surrounding settings, creating a charming overall composition that treats the eye well. Works by the artist are rarely presented in pairs, with such a balanced sense of compositional energy.
Handsomely presented in a combined washline mount, and distressed gilt wooden frame, as shown.
Signed. On wove.In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some discolouration to both works, mainly to the edges. There is also a light surface scratch to the right work, in the upper left corner. The frame is in fine condition.

Harry Y. Bright (1846-1895) was a British artist known for his ornithological and natural history paintings, especially of small songbirds. He produced watercolors, oils and illustrations, including the books Birds and Blossom (1879) and The ABC of Pretty Birdies (1896). Examples of his work can be found in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, and he is collected worldwide. His father, Henry Bright (1810-1873), was also a painter.
