Harriet Kempe was a painter born in Dartford, Kent. Little is known about her life and career. In 1893 she married artist Henry Stacy Marks, (1829-1898) and became his second wife. Kempe was a prolific exhibitor and showed under her maiden and married names at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery Art Society, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Society of Women Artists and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. She died in Hampstead, London.
