Artist Biography
Harold Yates (1916-2000) was an English painter. He studied at Portsmouth School of Art and later joined a commercial studio as a figure painter. His disillusionment with commercial art led him to explore abstract art and works from this period circa 1935-39 were shown at the Artists' International Association. His first solo exhibition was held at Foyles Art Gallery, London in 1935. Whilst serving in the army he made studies of his fellow soldiers, which were often humorous and satirical. On leaving the army he continued to paint part-time while working in an advertising agency, later becoming a freelance artist. A solo exhibition of his work was held at the Belgrave Gallery, London in 1989. His work is held by the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria Art Gallery.
