Artist Biography
Albert Chavepeyer (1899–1986) was a Belgian artist known for his work as a photographer, poster designer, illustrator, graphic artist, and painter. He was born in Châtelet, Belgium, on 20 July 1899 and died on 7 August 1986. He came from a family of visual artists, including his brothers Hector (painter) and Émile (photographer). Chavepeyer began his career in photography during the 1920s before working as an illustrator and poster artist in Paris and Belgium through the 1920s–1940s. He studied under teachers such as Sylvain and Eugène Paulus and at the Académie de Liège. Around the age of forty, he increasingly turned to painting, producing landscapes, regional genre scenes, and folkloric subjects — notably the carnivals and Gilles of Binche — in a colour-rich, impressionistic style. His work was exhibited in Belgium and internationally, with retrospectives in Charleroi and Châtelet. He also lived in Liège, Suresnes (France), and made extended stays in the United States in 1949–50 and 1953.
