Artist Biography
Binjé Frans (François Binjé, 1835-1900) was a Belgian Impressionist painter, watercolourist, and draughtsman from Liège. Known for his evocative landscapes of Brabant, the Ardennes, and the Belgian coast - particularly his watercolours of the North Sea - he began painting around 1855 and resumed his career in 1875 after studying with Henri van der Hecht. Between 1875 and 1890, he was most active, painting in both watercolour and oil, often working alongside fellow landscape artists in the Meuse and Lesse valleys and the artists’ colony of Genk. A member of the Tervueren School, Binjé combined realism with a poetic sensibility, using warm chalk tones and soft, atmospheric effects to convey the mists and moods of nature. He exhibited widely, including at the Brussels Salons, the Société des Aquarellistes, and the Paris World Fair of 1900. His works are now held in major Belgian museums, including those in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, and Verviers.
