Artist Biography

Hans Feibusch (1898-1998) was a German painter, sculptor, and lithographer of Jewish heritage. After fighting in the First World War, he studied art in Munich. He then worked under Karl Hofer at the Berlin University of the Arts, and then in Paris with Andre Lhote, before returning to Germany to establish a studio with Rudolf Heinisch and Benno Elkan. After the Nazi party came to power in 1933, Feibusch emigrated to England. Several of his works were subsequently exhibited in the 1937 exhibition of 'Entartete Kunst' ("Degenerate Art"). He joined the London Group of artists in 1934, and exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition in 1944. After the war, he became known for his church murals, producing around thirty murals for churches across the south of England. He converted to Christianity and was baptised and confirmed into the Church of England in 1965, but would return to Judaism in the final years of his life.
