Description

Armand Jean du Plessis (1585-1642), known as Cardinal Richelieu, was a French Catholic prelate and statesman. Having been consecrated a bishop in 1607, he quickly rose through the hierarchy of both the Catholic Church and the French government, becoming Foreign Secretary in 1616, a cardinal in 1622, and chief minister to King Louis XIII in 1624. His major goals were the establishment of royal absolutism in France and the end of Spanish-Habsburg hegemony in Europe. He is depicted here in miniature, with a serious expression and dressed in the traditional red robes of a cardinal. Beautifully presented in an antique gilt frame. Inscribed verso. Unsigned. On card.

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. Small areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
