Artist Biography

Gerard De Rose was a portrait painter and teacher, born in Accrington, Lancashire, his father being a surgeon and professor of music of Russian descent. He attended Accrington School of Art and Crafts, then won a Royal Exhibition in textile design to the Royal College of Art. His studies there were interrupted in 1939 and during World War II de Rose served in the Royal Engineers, taking part in the Dunkirk evacuation, resuming his studies at the RCA, 1946-50. Between 1950-58 de Rose taught at various art colleges, including the London College of Printing before being appointed Head of Fine Art at Maidstone College of Art, 1958-67.

De Rose was elected RBA in 1961 and also showed at the RA, RP, Trafford Gallery, William Ware Gallery, Alwin Gallery, Zaydler Gallery, Bradford Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery and at the Paris Salon. It is however as a portrait painter that he became best known. His sitters included the Duke of Bedford, Julie Christie, Vita Sackville-West, Rod Steiger, Sammy Davis Jnr, Claire Bloom, Mick Jagger and writer Vladimir Nabokov. The Nabokov portrait was featured of the cover of Time magazine. Examples of his work are in the collections of Haworth Art Gallery, Rochdale Art Gallery, Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Collection and Bolton Art Gallery.
