A crisp and characterful late Georgian portrait of an older noblewoman, sitting on a red velvet chair, with a Bible to her left and a letter in her hands (the letter faintly bares a name, likely that of the sitter, however, this is very indistinct). The sitter is next to an open window, out of which a beautifully detailed and delicate view of the distant Beverley minster in Yorkshire can be seen. The lady's fine clothes and gold jewellery show her to be a lady of high standing. The artist has wonderfully captured the character of the sitter and the smaller details of the painting have been rendered in exquisite detail, showing a skilled hand.
The painting is unsigned and presented in a handsome mid 20th Century gilt frame with swept rail and corners, scrolling acanthus leaf molding and a hatched cove.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a small area of restoration to an abrasion to the paint in the upper left corner. There is a small raised area to the canvas at the left edge. The canvas has been professionally relined. The frame is in fine condition with no losses.
