Signed in graphite in the lower left and inscribed in the lower right with the date and location- "Near Anvers Sept 1870 Gallifort". There is a study in graphite on the reverse depicting an armoured hand holding swords. On wove.

Condition

Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some mild discolouration.

Collection Information

From a large album of drawings variously dated mid to late 19th century. Many are inscribed. The drawings were all pasted down to both sides of sheets which were disintegrating. The individual drawings were removed from the backing sheets and cleaned.

Artist Biography

George Willoughby Maynard NA was an American artist born in Washington in 1843. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City before traveling widely in Europe. His travels took him to Italy, France, Hungary, as well as Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea. He spent the longest stretch in Antwerp where he studied at the Royal Academy.

Maynard is well known as a muralist and one is his best known murals is on display in the Library of Congress. His paintings are held in notable public collections including ‘In Strange Seas’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and this portrait of Francis Davis Millet which is held by the Smithsonian.

Maynard was a hugely accomplished artist. He was an Academician at the National Academy where he taught various classes. On top of this, he was a member of the Society of American Artists and the American Watercolour Society.
