Joseph Ridley Ratcliffe McCulloch was a painter and etcher born in Leeds. He studied at Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art. After World War I, he went to Paris where he studied at the Academie Colarossi. He taught at Ipswich School of Art and Goldsmiths' College, and showed at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Leicester Galleries, Chenil Gallery, and Redfern Gallery. His work is in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Wakefield Art Gallery and Huddersfield Art Gallery. Sadly, he succumbed to alcoholism and, towards the end of his life, was reported selling newspapers on street corners.
