George Willoughby Maynard (1843-1923) NA
George Willoughby Maynard NA was an American artist born in Washington in 1843. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City before traveling widely in Europe. His travels took him to Italy, France, Hungary, as well as Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea. He spent the longest stretch in Antwerp where he studied at the Royal Academy.

Maynard is well known as a muralist and one of his best-known murals is on display in the Library of Congress. His paintings are held in notable public collections including ‘In Strange Seas’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and a portrait of Francis Davis Millet which is held by the Smithsonian.
Maynard was a hugely accomplished artist. He was an Academician at the National Academy where he taught various classes. On top of this, he was a member of the Society of American Artists and the American Watercolour Society.
