Artist Biography
Liverpool born painter of marinescapes, the son of marine artist Samuel Walters (1811-1882). He also took lessons at the Liverpool Academy from the early age of fifteen and from his father, later becoming his assistant before moving to London in 1865 and branching out on his own. Within two years he was elected RBA. He showed over 400 times at the RBA and on many occasions at the RA, RI, ROI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Dudley Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, RBSA, Arthur Tooth & Sons and at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
His work is easily discernible by its sunsets in pinks and russets and often depicts sailing vessels of all varieties along the English and Dutch coast. His output was mainly in watercolours and oil paintings are rare. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, British Museum, Southampton City Art Gallery, Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, Rochdale Art Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Miles Walters (1774-1849) his grandfather was also a marine painter. The year of his birth is often erroneously given as 1838. Government records show that he was born during the last quarter of 1837. His work is often signed 'G.S. Walters'.
