Artist Biography
George Graham (1881-1949) was a painter and wood engraver, born in Leeds, the son of a carpenter. Graham studied for two years to become an architect, taking drawing lessons in the evenings at Leeds School of Art. He then studied at the London School of Art under Frank Brangwyn and others. Due, no doubt, to his geographic upbringing, he developed a fascination with the Yorkshire Dales, where he lived during a large part of his life. A prolific exhibitor at both London and provincial exhibitions, he became a member of ROI, RI, RSW, RSA, and RBA. Graham also exhibited at the RA, Royal Cambrian Academy, Agnew's, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, London Salon, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New English Art Club, Ipswich Art Club, Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and with his 'native' Yorkshire Union of Artists. He held the posts of President of the Society of Yorkshire Artists and Secretary of the Society of Sussex Painters.
Graham was affected by profound deafness which served to isolate him from everyday life. Examples of his work are in the collections of Bradford Art Gallery, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, Hull University Art Collection, Leeds City Art Gallery, National Museums Liverpool, Museums Sheffield, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Towner Art Gallery, and Worthing Art Gallery. Graham died at Battle in Sussex.
