Description

Horses stand on a towpath whilst a man sits in a small boat in this idyllic rural scene by George Frederick Harris (1856-1924). A quaint cottage, with smoke drifting from its chimney, can be seen nestled in the distance. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in a swept gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration and surface dirt. The artwork has undergone some restoration, including a canvas tear repair and overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some cracking to the ornamentation.

Artist Biography

George Frederick Harris (1856-1924) was a Welsh portrait and landscape painter. Although he was born in Birmingham, Harris lived in Merthyr Tydfil for most of his life before emigrating to Australia in 1920. He died in Sydney. He was chairman and secretary of the South Wales Art Society. Two of Harris's paintings were auctioned by Bonhams auctioneers in 2005. There are over 40 paintings attributed to Harris now held by public bodies or in public art collections.
