Description

An idyllic pastoral scene depicting a flock of sheep grazing beside large oak trees. An exquisite light falls upon the delicately observed and characterful animals, while a couple of red-roofed buildings can be seen in the distance with further trees and fields beyond. Presented in a black stained oak frame with a gilt-effect slip. Signed and dated to the lower-right edge. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

There is some discolouration, craquelure, and a small area of restoration. Some small marks to the frame and slip. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

George Frederick Harris (1856-1924) was a Welsh portrait and landscape painter. Although he was born in Birmingham, Harris lived in Merthyr Tydfil for most of his life before emigrating to Australia in 1920. He died in Sydney. Two of Harris's paintings, dated 1893 and 1896, were auctioned by Bonhams auctioneers in 2005. There are over 40 paintings attributed to Harris now held by public bodies or in public art collections.
