A 19th-century oil painting on canvas depicting a rural landscape at sunset. A displaced French soldier sits in the shade to the left of a large tree, conversing with a local villager for directions. The painting is well presented in a contemporary gilt-effect frame with canvas slip. Signed 'J. de Valmont' lower right. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. The frame and slip are in very good condition.
