There are creases to the upper two corners of the card, and lighter wear to the other edges. There are light and evenly distributed marks across the surface of the painting. Light wear to the frame.

George Edmund Butler was a landscape and genre painter, born in Southampton, who was raised in New Zealand from the age of 12. After completing his education at Te Aro School, Butler worked for his father and in 1890 studied art part-time under James Nairn at the Wellington School of Design. In 1892 he joined the avant-garde Wellington Art Club, founded by Nairn, and soon established a local reputation for his paintings of seascapes. Returning to England c. 1898 having signed on as a deckhand, Butler attended Lambeth School of Art, furthering his studies at the Académie Julian, Paris and later in Antwerp. In 1905 he relocated to Bristol where he took a teaching job as Art Master at Clifton College. Butler was a member of the Bristol Savages and elected RWA, 1912. After establishing a reputation as a portrait and landscape artist in oils and watercolours he also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RHA, the RSA and the annual salon exhibition at the Société des Artistes Français in Paris. He also designed a poster for London County Council Tramways in 1933.
During World War I Butler was attached to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as an Official War Artist. He showed at the RA, RWA and RSA. Butler never returned to New Zealand and went to reside at Trimley, Suffolk where he became a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1923-29 and died at Twickenham. His work is in the collection of the Bristol Art Gallery, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service and Christchurch Art Gallery, New Zealand. His daughter Berenice Butler was an illustrator.
