A view of Ballinakill, a natural harbour near the small village of Letterfrack in Connemara. Misty mountains loom in the distance. Presented glazed in a white mount and an ornate gilt-effect frame. Signed to the lower-right edge. The location 'Letterfrack' is inscribed in graphite on the verso of the substrate. On watercolour paper laid to board.

Condition

There is some slight foxing and discolouration and some small scratches to the glass. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Captain George Drummond Fish (1876-1938) was known for his portraits and landscape paintings. He studied at Liverpool School of Art and was awarded a travelling scholarship allowing him to move around Paris, Brussels and Antwerp. Fish joined up during the first years of the First World War and saw action at Gallipoli as part of the 29th Brigade of the 10th (Irish) Division. There he produced numerous military paintings and sketches of the bleak landscape of the Gallipoli peninsula, including eight watercolour sketches that were used to illustrate Henry Hanna's book 'The Pals at Suvla Bay', which recorded the exploits of the Irish Rugby Football Union volunteers. Watercolours of Gallipoli by Drummond-Fish are also held by the National Army Museum, London, and the Royal Irish Regiment, Ballymena.
