Description

A truly impressive late 19th Century (c.1870) Welsh landscape in oil This painting, in remarkable condition and of impressive size, shows a a rocky, stepped waterfall on the River Llugwy in Snowdonia. The rocky banks and cliffs around the river are lined with heather and verdant plant life. The leaves on several of the trees are turning from green to brown and orange, indicating this scene to be set during early Autumn. The blue sky is filled with white clouds that skim the distant tip of Mount Snowdon, far in the distance. Having been recently professionally restored, the colours are incredibly vivid.

The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting has been handsomely presented in a contemporary, gilt frame with swept and pierced rail and corners with acanthus leaf detailing.

On relined canvas.

Condition

The painting has undergone full professional restoration. It has been fully and successfully relined and has been cleaned so that its colour is almost as new. There is a small area of restoration to the upper left quadrant. The frame is in fine condition.

Artist Biography

George Bautista Yarnold was born in 1851 and died somewhere between 1891 and 1901. Four of his children and their mother, now a widow, were in the Census of 1901. His father was a Comedian and his mother was Spanish, possibly why he has the second name of Bautista and the family lived in various places in Lambeth or Southwark in South London. His brother Joseph W. (1854-after 1901) was also an artist and painted similar scenes to George.
George was listed as an artist, working on his own account in the Census of 1871 and 1881, but by 1891 he was listed as a Printer. Possibly having to provide for 4 daughters, 1 son and a wife meant that he had to give up art as a profession.
He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
