A charming late 18th/early 19th century oil landscape by British artist George Arnald ARA (1763-1841). The scene depicting a mother and child on a country lane, heading in the directing of a large stone bridge. The oil has been labelled to the reverse and inscribed 'George Arnald. A.R.A. Purchased of his window, 10th February 1842. J.J.' Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration caused by a fine build up of dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals a small area of overpainting in the lower right quadrant.

Artist Biography

George Arnald ARA (1763-1841) was a British painter who specialised in landscapes, from topographical views to illustrated county histories. He is best known for his celebrated painting 'The Destruction of L'Orient at the Battle of the Nile', now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Little is known about Arnald's early life; accounts variously give his birthplace as Farndip (now Farndish) in Northamptonshire (now Bedfordshire) or Berkshire. He went on to exhibit 176 works at the Royal Academy and was elected an associate member in 1810. He also exhibited 63 works at the British Institution.
