Geoffrey Birkbeck RBA RSW - Original Early 20th Century Watercolour. A very fine watercolour by Geoffrey Birkbeck RBA, RSW, 1875-1954. this is a view of Norwich from Mousehold Heath showing the Cathedral and the castle. (Thanks to Alistair, a helpful eBayer for identifying the location for me) Signed lower left. 37 x 53 cm on watercolour board. Unframed. Fine condition. Geoffrey Birkbeck was born in Norwich in 1875 and educated at Eton College. He was a well-known water-colourist and muralist and was celebrated for his landscape paintings of Norfolk and Italy. His first solo show took place in 1903 at Carfax Gallery and was followed by other shows at New Dudley, Goupil and Walker's Galleries. Birkbeck was a member of the RBA and Norwich Art Circle and participated in numerous shows at the Norwich Castle Museum. Birkbeck also published a book entitled Old Norfolk Houses. The book, which contained reproductions of Birkbeck's artworks, shows the influence of the baroque style on his practice. He died in 1954, aged 79.
