Description
This engraving is taken from William Hogarth's Marriage-a-la-Mode series in which he follows the marriage story of Viscount Squanderfield and the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Hogarth takes the opportunity to tell a cautionary tale of why marriage should be for love and not financial gain. In this fist plate the two fathers negotiate the marriage terms as the young couple sit in the back of the room, showing no interest in each other. Titled, dated and signed by the engraver to the lower edge of the print. On paper laid to thin card.
