A fine 20th Century oil copy of the original 1758 portrait by Pompeo Batoni. The scene shows a finely dressed young man in a vivid red frock coat with an elaborately embroidered waistcoat. He holds a book in one hand and his feathered hat under the other arm. He is pointing at papers on his desk with a small figuring to the right. There is a distant view of the Colosseum in the background. The artist has signed to the middle of the right edge. The painting has been presented in a very fine ripple molded frame with gilt effect and white slip. On wood panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is an area of scuffing to the lower left edge.

Artist Biography

Pompeo Girolamo Batoni was an Italian painter who displayed a solid technical knowledge in his portrait work and in his numerous allegorical and mythological pictures. The high number of foreign visitors travelling throughout Italy and reaching Rome during their "Grand Tour" led the artist to specialize in portraits.
