A fine oil interior scene full of narrative. The scene shows a tax collector and his lackey accosting a young woman for her taxes. The woman is clearly a formerly wealthy widow (clear from her black dress) who has been forced to take lodging with her children in an attic room. She can be seen with a delicate tear on her cheek as she pulls the pearls from a necklace to give to the tax collector. His lackey tears the sleeves of a beautiful dress while the tax collector leans aggressively over the table. The widow's children look on in worry and fear, This painting has a rich story and the artist has achieved a beautiful light streaming in through the window.
The painting is unsigned and presented in a very fine gilt cassetta frame from the renowned framers James Bourlet & Sons. There is a framer's sticker at the back with the artist's name and date of framing
On canvas.The painting has Some discoloration and there is a restored crack to the paint in the upper left corner. The frame has slight splitting in the lower right corner and some surface scuffs and dents which have been retouched.
