Description

This striking mid-19th-century portrait depicts a respectable middle-class woman dressed in the conservative fashion of her era. She wears a black gown complemented by a detailed white lace collar, while a delicately trimmed lace bonnet closely frames her face. A long gold chain falls gracefully from her neck to her waist, adding a subtle note of refinement. The overall effect is one of composure and restraint, tempered by quiet affluence. Unsigned. Inscribed and dated to the left. Well presented in a gilt frame with rounded corners. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Light abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Some thinning to the canvas and small holes throughout. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and stable cracks throughout. The frame has been previously restored.
