A delightful landscape painting of the Yorkshire Dales by British artist Frederick (Fred) Stead (1863-1940). The composition features leafy autumn trees framing a sunlit view of the rolling green dales beyond. This painting is a quintessential example of Stead’s gentle brushwork and developed landscape style. Signed to the lower left. Handsomely presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling acanthus detail. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Light discolouration to the varnish. Light abrasions to the surface, notably to the lower margin. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Light wear to the frame, including small scuffs and chips throughout.

Artist Biography

Frederick (Fred) Stead (1863-1940) was born in Shipley, Yorkshire. A painter of portraits and genre scenes, he studied at the Shipley School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Stead went on to teach at both the Shipley and Bradford Schools of Art, where he served as Life Art Master and occasionally worked as an Art Inspector for the West Riding County Council. He later became Head of the Saltaire School of Art. Stead was active in the regional art scene, serving as Chairman of the Society of Yorkshire Artists and as a life member of the Bradford Art Club. His work was exhibited widely, including at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Walker Art Gallery, and with the lesser-known Wharfedale Group. His works are held in the collections of Bradford Museums and Galleries, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.
